S.T.E.M. Explorations
2015:

S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)is a natural fit for children.  The natural curiosity of children drives them to explore how the world works.  Children engage in design, the fundamental activity of engineering, every day as they build with blocks or deign contraptions to make something interesting happen.  When observant adults notice how children are already working to engage in STEM, they can support them by proiding materials and experiences that allow them to engage more deeply in their investigations.  When properly supported with time, materials, and experiences, children's creativity kicks in prompting the addion of the "Arts" to STEM or STEAM.  This work is important to the children of Iowa.  As cited by the Governor's Strategic Plan for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education, "Every Iowan needs a strong foundation in science and mathematics accompanied by familiarity with their applications to engineering and technology to be productive citizens and economic contributors."  The task force also identified a need to "increase involvement of students under-represented (i.e. women, ethnic/racial minority students, students with disabilities, etc.) in STEM enrichment programs.

Summer Investigations 2015, will be held June 22 - 26 at Fred Becker Elementary in Waterloo, Iowa.  Throughout the week, students will be invited to investigate the biological, geological, and physical world.  As they explore the beneits of existing technology in inquiry, they will also be designing technology of their own.  As they problem solve and gather information, they will be supported i using mathematics as a language to organize and communicat their thinking.
